Through this experience, kids ages 7-12 explore gardening, mindfulness, and creativity, while learning how resilience grows. At the St. Clair Butterfly Foundation, gardening is one of the expressive arts in our Beyond Trauma-Informed framework. These hands-on activities help build regulation-centered environments for children to build resilience and emotional well-being. Lake Ann Historic Walking Tour The Benzie Area Historical Society has partnered with the Almira Historical Society, which will lead a historical walking tour of the Village of Lake Ann. Please meet at the Almira Historical Society Museum, 19440 Maple St, Lake Ann, MI, around 4:45 pm. The walk will be approximately 1 mile long, starting with a tour of the museum property’s buildings, then proceeding to the heart of the village, highlighting several historical buildings and locations along the way. After the tour, participants may choose to stop at Lake Ann Brewing for a beverage and live music while enjoying dinner from Stone Oven, located right next to the brewery. The walk will take place along the gravel/sandy drive of the museum to a paved side street that leads to a sidewalk into the village and will last approximately 60 – 90 minutes. There is a slight incline in both directions. Registration is required as space is limited.

Beyond Benzie: Sleeping Bear Point Maritime Museum

Step into the boots of a US Life Saving Service surfman! Sleeping Bear Dunes needs you — especially kids — to help practice the Beach Apparatus Drill. The Beach Apparatus was a land-based rescue method used by the US Life-Saving Service. A small cannon sent ropes out to a sinking ship, creating a zip-line from the ship to the shore. The apparatus saved thousands of lives nationwide, including here in the Manitou Passage. Join the demonstration to help "fire" a kid-powered Lyle Gun and rescue victims from a "shipwreck". No experience necessary, just a sense of adventure! Perfect for families, kids, and anyone curious about Great Lakes Maritime history. Arrive a few minutes early as drills begin on Thursday at 3 pm sharp. In past years, after the demonstration, a replica Lyle gun was fired on the beach using a black-powder charge. This firing will not occur in 2026. National Park Service historic weapons demonstrations can only be conducted by a certified Historic Weapons Supervisor. Sleeping Bear Dunes is currently without a Historic Weapons Supervisor. The demonstration lasts roughly 30 minutes. Free. All programs are free with a valid park entrance pass.

The spirit of Greenwich Village’s legendary folk scene is coming to Elberta when acclaimed singer-songwriter Rod MacDonald performs an intimate concert at the Elberta Heritage Center on Thursday, September 3 at 7:30 pm. “A Greenwich Village Folk Night” will feature MacDonald performing songs associated with two of the folk revival’s most influential voices, Bob Dylan and Phil Ochs, alongside selections from his own extensive catalog of original songs. MacDonald is uniquely suited to bring this music to life. A longtime fixture of New York City’s Greenwich Village folk scene, he was a major part of the Village folk revival of the 1980s, performing at legendary venues including Folk City, The Bottom Line and the Cornelia Street Cafe. He also co-founded the Greenwich Village Folk Festival. Over a career spanning more than five decades, MacDonald has released numerous recordings, toured extensively throughout the United States and Europe, and shared stages with artists including Pete Seeger, Odetta, Tom Paxton, Suzanne Vega, Emmylou Harris and Richie Havens. For one night in Elberta, audiences will have the opportunity to experience that Greenwich Village tradition up close — just a singer, a guitar, great songs and the stories behind them.

Yoga on the Beach

Beyond Benzie: Sleeping Bear Point Coast Guard Station Maritime Museum

The practice of yoga starts by showing up with the intention of looking inside oneself to reflect on what your body and soul may need. We are honored to be able to do so on the lovely lakeshore of the Sleeping Bear Sand Dunes. Yoga on the Beach is a business supporter of Friends of Sleeping Bear Dunes. These popular beach yoga classes are offered on a donation basis, with proceeds benefiting both Yoga on the Beach and Friends of Sleeping Bear Dunes. A suggested donation to Yoga on the Beach of $15–$25 is appreciated, though participants are encouraged to contribute whatever fits their budget. Yoga on the Beach is held at the Sleeping Bear Point Coast Guard Station Maritime Museum, to the west of the Cannery. (Take a left at the stop sign in front of the big red building and follow the signs.) There is a parking lot for the Museum on the right just before the Sleeping Bear Point Trailhead.
